And…let’s also never forget that marketing as a system has one true goal: creating new customers. It’s not sales. It’s creating a new customer and hopefully, a customer for life. Peter Drucker’s books outline Marketing really well - - which still applies even to this day.

MRC: Congrats on another great post. You are dead-on regarding marketing (and PR, for that matter…) being a system.

I used to advice the CEO of a $250 million company on PR strategies. His big wish was to “be on the cover of the New York Times.” He kept thinking of marketing and PR as a big splash, one-time news announcement that would get his name in lights.

But when you use the system approach you’ve described, marketing becomes a solid habit — like eating right or exercising regularly.
