Related to number 2 but often overlooked by small business owners is succession planning. What if the personal situation is that you are ready to retire but own 100% or a significant portion of the company. Selling to another organization isn’t the only way to get your equity back out but it may be one of the only options if you’re not planning for the inevitable (note: replace “are ready to retire” with “die” and the point may seem more urgent). MSP’s are based on long term contracts so they’re not as easy to just shut down without leaving someone stuck with obligations.

Good point, Colin. This also raises the issue around how best to sell your business, as there are many ways to do this.

Often people at the point of “retirement” prefer to keep the business in the hands of their employees by selling to an ESOP, which has pretty cool benefits.

Mike,
Not sure if you have ever read the story of the cliff bar by the CEO and creator but he faced this very question as well. He was offered well more than the company was worth and was burnt out…..but he didn’t sell! And he didn’t because he believed in what his product represented and truly cared for his company and the people in it……

Sometimes it’s just good ethics that keep people from selling and a belief in their product/service.

I would make an additional list but this one would be why NOT to sell instead.

However….when the belief and passion are gone….it’s time to go.

#7: Innovation - sell when you’re running out of innovative ideas, or right when you’ve just unveiled your most innovative idea ever. When you stop innovating and launching new services, you’re done.
