Mike,
First of all thank you for this insight. If i read it correctly I believe what you are saying is that the IT landscape is not only changing but changing the way MSP’s will do business. It would seem to me that the foundation of most MSP’s is the traditional “we do all the plumbing” offerings in various forms, but as the Zenith’s of the world rise to the occasion we will see a shift to a different set of offerings where the “plumbing” side of things is not only easier to offer but is just a fact of business.

The profit margin, and competitive advantage of successful MSP’s will soon come from the providing of services that are focused on the issues a business is concerned with - and our role to utilize technology to help that business solve problems whether it be higher efficiences, greater profit margins, marketing, sales, etc.

This is a fundamental shift from what most IT professionals are used to doing but it’s necessary and I would even add that it’s crucial to the ongoing relationship with clients and the future of an MSP.

No problem on calling me Mike it happens all the time.

Your summary of the shift taking place is right on the mark and you are also right that most IT professionals are not used to doing so. It will require business skills and good business skills at that. Last week at the Connectwise summit a gentleman who I would consider to be one of the best ‘business’ minded technology people in the room stood up in front of a thousand people and asked “who is going to teach all of us these business skills because they are going to be critical to to our survival?” The room went pretty quite and the panel did not direclty answer the question but it is a legitimate question a large portion of our industry is asking. It is one thing to build a 2M word of moth business over a handful of years, it is a whole other thing to have the ability to grow something larger based on scalable processes allowing the owner to step out of so desired.

It will be interesting for sure. We are already seeing a lot more business consultants, and processes consultants pitching their services to our industry trying to full in this void as the shift begins. I have not worked with them, yet, but what seems to be a great resource in our industry for figuring out how to run a scalable service business is Ant Farm: http://www.antfarm-inc.com/

Hope this helps and I hope you all are working on how you will position your business in the future.

JC
