If you didn’t see it today Google announced their intent to change the operating system game. Google Chrome OS will be built around open source and incorporated into low cost notebooks for consumers. We have all watched Linux desktops try to gain traction in the business marketplace with little success. So what makes Google’s open source OS have a better change, well anything Google puts their brand and weight behind has a shot at taking off.
There are still a lot of questions to be answered about Chrome (what will move manufacturers from being interested in the OS to shipping product with it installed? consumer only?) as well as determining what Google’s intentions for the OS are but for now it will be interesting to watch things unfold.
If nothing else it has Microsoft’s attention for sure as they still work to fight off the margin problems Google Apps is causing for MS office.
